Becker Power Barge

Clean power for cruise ships and port industry

eCap Marine has developed the advanced Becker Power Barge, an innovative solution for improving air quality in harbour cities by reducing emissions from cruise ships in port. It produces significantly lower emissions than the diesel engines used to generate power on board cruise ships.

The Becker Power Barge has been shown to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% and NOX by 80% with no particulates or sulfur emissions whatsoever. Designed as a flexible and mobile solution, the barge supplies Shore to Ship Power to cruise ships during the summer season and is able to operate as a floating power and heat plant in the winter.

Classified as a seagoing vessel, the world’s first Becker Power Barge in operation in the port of Hamburg is 76.0 m long, 11.4 m wide with a draught of 2.5 m. It is equipped with five silently operating 1.5 MW LNG GenSets fuelled by two 17 t LNG containers. eCap Marine has already developed further Power Barge layouts like the TWOship Barge with a power output of 24 MW and the ability to supply two ships at the same time.

The energy sector triangle

The Energy Sector Triangle The three challenges of modern power supply are to a) produce affordable power with b) lower or no emissions and c) 100% guaranteed supply on demand.

The power consumption of cruise ships is high and scheduled arrivals need a just-in-time supply. Usually, the power grid capacity is too low, the frequency has to be converted to 60 Hz and national energy laws and taxes do not satisfy the needs of the international maritime sector.

The Becker Power Barge attains all three of these aims: guaranteed, affordable and clean power supply on demand and in line with national energy laws.
